Eligibility Criteria

The goal of the June R. Chaus Scholarship is to assist students who are committed to working for social justice, and who may have been disadvantaged due to race, ethnicity, national background, religious affiliation or sexual orientation. Students who have been inspired to work for constructive social change due to one or more of the above factors are also welcome to apply. Preference may be extended to individuals who identify as members of the African American or Jewish communities. Annual scholarships of up to $1,500 each may be awarded to applicants who:

1. Have been admitted to an approved undergraduate or graduate institution in the Pacific Northwest.

2. Are pursuing studies in human services, health care, education, public affairs or a related field. Other majors or courses of study may be considered, but the student should explain how his or her career choice will help him or her work for a more just society.

3. Have demonstrated financial need. Financial need is defined as four times the Federal poverty level for student income, or if student is under the age of 23, for family income.

4. Have demonstrated strong academic aptitude. The applicant’s grade point average is an important indicator of aptitude, but will be considered in light of challenges or obstacles that he or she has had to overcome.

5. Are considered to be minority students, based on race, ethnicity, religious affiliation or sexual orientation. See Part 1 of the application.

6. Successfully complete a competitive, 500-word essay on an assigned topic. Essays will be evaluated based in part upon the applicant’s ability to demonstrate a sustained commitment to social and economic justice.
